Not everyone can remain strong, despite the circumstances. For many people to make the right conclusions is a backbreaking labor. But it is enough to look at the situation as a useful experience to draw the necessary conclusions and to direct them in the future.

The Importance Of Relaxation

It realy is bizarre. I know lots of people who have told me that they simply cannot how to relax. One client told me that he feels guilty sitting relaxing on a Saturday – he feels obliged to fly around the house or garden hell bent on finding something to do. Another friend recently told me that, whilst Saturday morning is golf time, and although he actually goes out for his round, he doesn’t really play! He can’t – his mind is reliving what happened during last week or what’s happening next week. He’s playing golf but, not only is he not chilled, he’s not even all there! Even worse, a client who doesn’t have a care in the world – great job that he’s really on top of, great personal life, great everything, tells me that when he plays golf he actually feels guilty – feeling that he should be at home or in the office!

Modern life pretty much demands that we must be constantly on the go. But there’s a big difference between filling your life with activity and getting the really important things done. And one of those important things that you must have as an integral part of your life is time to chill. A New York Times article a few years ago explained that native tribes in the Amazon basin live the life that every New Yorker wants – seven hours work each week, the rest spent at leisure. However, New Yorkers simply wouldn’t know what to do with all that leisure. Sure, there’d be loads of activity crammed into it – but what about totally chilling (like the Amazonians)?

Get yourself an easy chair, sit down and do nothing for thirty minutes – you’ll be amazed where your mind takes you. Or find a shade tree, spread out a blanket and just sit down. This is the quality space that we need in our lives – not to recharge our batteries, but to clear our heads, let inspiration enter and focus on the crucial things that we need to do to be happy and successful. I’ve recently had to clean up the mess after a self help “guru” told one of my clients that she should ‘follow her heart’ in pursuing a man that she’d had an on-and-off relationship with for the past five years. Her heart had told her that this guy was what she wanted – even though there was ample evidence that would suggest the exact opposite to a casual observer. But, she took this “guru’s” advice and threw herself body and soul into making him love her! With the blindgly obvious outcome.

However, if she really was following her heart, how could it have turned out so pear-shaped? The phrase “listen to your heart” is a loaded one. First of all, we should not pay any attention to what our head tells us. The vast majority of highly successful business people tell us that you should go with your gut (another word for heart) and research tells us that the normal mind is wandering through a haze of random thought – up to fifty thousand of them each and every day.

But, if the head is in a fog, the heart is obscured behind a veil of much more sinister useless thought – thoughts that have been lurking in the shadows since our formative years – thoughts that the subconscious mind likes to dwell on – and the subconscious mind is most likely to cosy up to those thoughts if they happen to be negative. In other words, when most of us listen to our hearts, we’re hearing something that has been grossly distorted by our own programming and conditioning so that we end up thinking that we’re sure of what will make us happy – which is often a far cry from what is truly best for us.

So, if you want to be sure that you’re listening to your gut instinct or your heart, you’re going to have to get past this veil of deep-seated thought and the only way that you can do that – and it’s blindingly obvious when you think about it – is to clear your mind. We all need to clear our mind completely so that we can distinguish the wood from the trees! But, more than that, a clear mind is an inspired mind and it is through inspiration that we’re most suitably guided towards our perfect life.
