Happiness And Success – Now Pay Attention

I’ve been issuing a Free Personal Development Ezine for the past few years – each Monday and Wednesday morning, articles and short videos – and from the feedback I’ve been getting I’ve no choice but to believe that there’s too many people out there who moan about their existence, but who won’t take the appropriate steps to change. Most people are unhappy in what they do for a living but put up with it as a necessity. People become numb from the routine of everyday living. Many people are unhappy in their relationships. And, of course, most people are dissatisfied with themselves – their shape, weight, lack of assertiveness, low self-esteem, eating habits, lack of fitness… But what all these people – and there’s a whopping great chance that this includes you – don’t realize is that every single aspect of their lives would alter beyond recognition if they simply pulled themselves together and paid attention.

Yeah, you heard me – just like your teacher told you in nursery school! Psychology confirms that your happiness and success is correlated to how well you pay attention. That sounds weird – but just think about it. Successful people know how to focus – and focus is just a fancy word for paying attention. Presence is one of the main hallmarks of success – successful people have presence – and that just means that they are more attentive to the here and now. Or, in simple English, successful people make the effort to turn up to their own lives! They attend to the here and now – they invest their full attention.

Contrast this with your average Joe who, research concludes, is missing in action! The normal mind is, to quote an Irish expression, ‘not all there’ – we’re all over the place. Your normal mind is paying attention to your ‘stored knowledge’ – what you learned in your formative years. Your normal mind has no interest in what’s actually happening now and that’s why ordinary people are firmly strapped onto life’s sorry-go-round!

You need to pay attention, focus, get your head in the game. And, in actual fact, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t know what you want out in your life (who is?!) – what’s most important is that you pay attention to what’s going on right now – you never know what opportunities you might spot (which you caannot spot if you’re not all there!). Focus is about the here and now. Focus is about doing what you’re supposed to be doing without focusing on your self-sabotaging beliefs (from ‘I can’t stand my job’ to ‘I dislike me’). Paying attention is down to being present, having presence and going with life’s flow.

Hasn’t it occurred to you that all the wonderful things that have ever taken place in your life (yeah, even if you’re a sad person, something good happened somewhere along the way) happened in a spontaneous manner? You can turn back on life’s spontaneity, all you’ve got to do is turn up to your own life – in this present moment – focus on what’s actually going on, not what your weird, normal mind would have you believe is happeing.

Meditation Opens Doors

I have been running my own Personal Development Seminars since 1996. A few years ago one of my best friends participated in the Seminar after which he asked me “How long have you been running Meditation Workshops?” My answer was that I had never viewed meditation as the key part of the seminar – that I see meditation as a tool. On that two days, I had a participant who had meditated for the previous twenty three years. He explained to me that he might as well have been “scratching his backside” for those minutes each morning because he hadn’t appreciated the connection between his meditation and the rough and tumble, annoyance and pain of normal daily life. He got his twenty minutes tranquillity each morning – but all the good it did him!

As I say, meditation is simply a tool – and, like a hammer, you can use it for its proper purpose or you can wallop yourself with it! Meditation is simply a means to an end and it will not make any difference to your life unless you are sure in your head why you’re meditating and what you really want from your life as a result of your meditation. In other words, meditation is a key for unlocking your innate potential and achieving your innermost dreams. Meditation disciplines an otherwise completely undisciplined mind. If you don’t understand this just run your eye over seven decades of research in the field of psychology which confirm that the normal mind is out of control. Meditation gives you back control of your mind and, as a result, control of your life.

With this in mind, perhaps you will begin to see meditation in its wider context. It’s not an end in itself. Before you ever sit down to meditate ask yourself what your key objectives are. I’m not talking about the normal crass nonsense that self help gurus talk about – I’m not talking about top-end cars, Caribbean beaches, fancy condos and speedboats. My concern is what really matters to you – and only you can answer that question. But, if you don’t address these issues first, your daily existence will continue to be just as confused after your meditation as it was beforehand.

Establish why you want to meditate. With your objectives in mind, meditation is transformed and transforming. Through clearing your cluttered mind, through tuning out the noise in your head, meditation frees you up to attend to what’s important and come to your senses (all five of them!). It will enable you pay attention to the reality of the here and now – and it’s what you actually do in each moment of your life that determine where you are going in life.

Get Your Head In Gear – The Only Way To Self Improvement

If you don’t appreciate how important it is to focus your mind, you can never live the dream. You’ll never achieve anything great and you will be forever plagued by the self sabotaging thoughts and voices in your head that are an essential part of normal everyday life. How you focus your mind, how you control your mind is the key that unlocks all the abundant things that can flow freely in your life. It’s up to you to let them flow. So, you need to learn how to focus your mind, for becoming an expert ‘focuser’ is the ultimate self improvement.

Focus is paying attention. Some people will tell you that you have to focus on your goals – but those goals of yours, whatever they might be, will only be achieved in the long run if you discover how to focus your energy right here, right now. Focus is a now thing. What you do right here, right now doesn’t only influence if you’ll achieve your goals, it determines the very course of your life. I’m not exaggerating – if you don’t pay full attention to what you’re actually supposed to be doing right now, not only can you not do it to the best of your ability, more importantly, your mind, by default, will pay attention to your inner voices – the nonsense that not only is completely irrelevant to the here and now but stuff that constantly constrains you from being all that you can be.

You must understand that the normal default state of mind is to focus on what a psychologist might term our ‘stored knowledge’. This so-called knowledge constantly informs our minds in relation to what’s happening in the world and then determines how we react. The only problem is that all of our most important stored knowledge was learned when we were young and impressionable – some of the most important stuff being learned before we were three years old! So, if my dream is to rise to the top of some big company, or bring my breath-taking new software to an eagerly waiting world, or to settle down in my dream home in the South of France, what has what I learned when I was three years old got to do with the adult me?

The short answer is ‘no’ – the long answer is worse! Think about it, we get all our preconceived notions of our own inadequacy from our stored knowledge. You’ve got to consciously and deliberately, stop your mind focusing on that out-of-date stored knowledge – and the only real alternative is to pay full attention to the real world – the now. It’s not just the only time and place in which we all actually live, paying attention to now makes everything easier and makes you better at whatever it is your currently supposed to be doing. But focusing on now does not come naturally – so you’re going to have to cultivate it. And as the word, cultivate, suggests, this is something that you must do constantly and consistently.

And your best starting point is right at the beginning of each day – the old Irish proverb that a good start is half the job is spot on. If you don’t tune your mind in first thing every morning, you’re on a slippery slope that’s just too easy to slip down. Why’s that? Quite simply because you’re used to it, that’s how you’ve been existing for all your adult life.

So, tomorrow morning, take five or ten minutes to turn off the noise in your head. Sit down, somewhere quiet, shut your eyes and feel what it’s like to breathe. Feel how it is to sit on the chair. Hear how it is to really and truly hear all the background noises that your normal mind doesn’t notice. Take a few minutes out two or three times in the course of the day too to repeat the exercise. You could sit down in the park and see what it’s really like to actually simply look at what’s actually happening, you could hear the birds, smell the roses.

The secret to your success is found in your ability to concentrate – not on the future, not on your ambitious plans and dreams, but on the only what’s real, right here, right now.

Would You Like To Change Your Life

I’ve yet to meet anyone who is completely happy with their lives to the extent that they wouldn’t change a single thing. And, as you probably know, large numbers of people say they’re dissatisfied in their job, their financial situation, their eating habits, their fitness or the quality of their personal lives – or every single one of the above!! In short, normal people are normally not happy. Small wonder that most visitors discover my self help website by Googling Change Your Life.

However, surely it isn’t that simple to change your life – otherwise all those unhappy people would be doing it! Because most of us, whilst being disillusioned are also afraid of change. So, if this sounds like you, you’re pretty much stuck between a rock and a hard place! The problem is, first of all, that everyone’s scared of the unknown – even if it is the great unknown that they hope to achieve! And, through past experience, they also know that, when they’ve attempted major changes in the past, they haven’t been able to stick to their guns.

I’m sitting writing this piece on February 15th – and by now, statistics show, over 90% of people’s New Year Resolutions will have fallen by the wayside! And there’s just so many studies that prove just how difficult we normal people find it to change. Did you know, for example, that the average membership of a gym is twelve weeks – and in those twelve weeks the average new recruit manages just two visits! Not going to get fit that way!

Now, I haven’t set out to further disillusion you or to confirm to you that you cannot change your life. I put my bread on the table by helping people change their lives. They all ask me how I took such a courageous risk when I moved from my native Ireland – with my wife and three teenage children – to the French Alps. My answer is always the same – it was the obvious move to make because so many small things had changed in the lead up to what other people perceive as a major change. It wasn’t, it was simply the logical next step.

You see, you change your life by changing really small things. That way, your normal mind – and the normal mind simply loves things to stay the way they were when you were a child – becomes accustomed to change. Little by little you completely deconstruct all the things that you want to change in your life and you become so comfortable with change that the things that you want to happen simply happen as that logical next step.

So, where to kick off? Start really small – like eat something unusual for breakfast this morning – or actually have breakfast! Take a different bus or train. Strike up a conversation with a stranger. Switch the knife and fork in your hands at lunchtime. Mix it up – because your mind’s mixed up right now – and out of that mix up will arrive the clarity of mind you’ve been searching for.

Only You Can Change Your Life

It’s down to you to change your life – but only you can do it. It doesn’t matter what’s happening in the everyday detail of your life, what barriers you confront in life or what problems you think you have. Life’s ups and downs are just that – what goes up must come down and vice versa. And all the ups and downs of life pass – one way or another. There is but one constant in life. And that is who we can be – not who we think we are, which is a markedly different kettle of fish!

But the average mind doesn’t know who they really are or the heights to which they could rise. And if were ordered to focus your mind, you wouldn’t know how. The average mind is bombarded by its own destructive thoughts and the synchronized thoughts of herd-like behaviour. But even the herd can break free – look at how ordinary people in oppressed places like Tunisia, Jordan and Egypt are rewriting the political map of the Middle East. And, in the same way, recall the way popular revolt tore down the Berlin Wall. If the seemingly immovable objects of entrenched regimes can crumble so easily, then how much effortless is it for your own imagined ideas about yourself and about your life to vanish.

After all, the only place that your misconceptions about who you are and the kind of life you could have are in your own imagination. Sure, they seem real, they bring about concrete results, often for the worse, in your life – but they are, nevertheless, the creation of your own conditioned mind. Psychology confirms that we are conditioned during our childhood by the things that make the biggest impression on us. It is a psychological fact that we are all predisposed to thinking the worst about ourselves. All this conditioning, which swirls below the surface of our minds, creates our behavior, how we react and, as a result, what others think of us, do for us or to us. Our thoughts create our lives.

Bearing that in mind, how obvious is it that, if you could change your thoughts, you would change your life? The whole structure of your perceived life would collapse as surely and convincingly as the Berlin Wall. And your life would start afresh. However, it’s not quite as simple as it sounds. The Berlin Wall was only sitting on concrete foundations – the foundations of your life are far more subtly secured in your subconscious. So, rather than trying to dismantle the web of thoughts that ties you down, it is far better, far more effective, if you simply ignore their unreality by directing your focus to reality – the reality of what’s actually taking place right here, right now.

Freedom from all your fears, doubts and worries is to be found when you focus your mind on what you are actually seeing, feeling, hearing, smelling and tasting right here, right now. Understand that, learn how to do it and your life will never be the same again.

Learn How To Master Mind Your Ideas

Mastermind is not just one of the most famous and oldest board games. The term contains larger connotations behind it depending on how you use it. Mastermind groups include a combination of shared brainstorming, accountability, support, and education. The group setting sharpens both your personal and business skills. A mastermind group is your pathway to success.

The deep interactions between the members of a mastermind group stimulate them to reach their potentials and push their abilities forward as individuals, and as a whole group. When you set goals and measure your progress towards achieving them, evaluating what you finally accomplish within a group of like-minded individuals, the benefits are priceless. Energy emissions coming from the rest of the group will automatically affect you. You will be much more motivated to work towards achieving what you said you would among your peers. Whenever you start falling back or getting tired, you are sure there are many hands ready to lift you and encourage you to pursue your aims. You also know that there are others around you that keep reminding you of what you are doing, and why you are doing it. Finally, when your aims are achieved, there is a small family that will celebrate your success, and encourage you to add to your accomplishments even more.

When you apply the rules of productive brainstorming and encourage creativity in your ideas, even if they initially sound crazy, your group will be able to come up with genuine and original thoughts. Set a certain time for brainstorming. For the first few minutes, do not say a word, just think. Then the most important thing about brainstorming is never to dismiss any idea that was spoken out. Write every single thing that comes across your minds down. After the brainstorming period is over, start sorting out the written information and ideas. Do not dismiss a single idea until you think it through, discuss it, and try including it somehow in the larger scheme. Refine your ideas and plan for action based on them.

Mutual moral support does wonders to your career and your whole life. When you have a group of close friends who think like you do around you; when they call you frequently to ask how you are doing; when you meet and discuss each others’ projects and you are facing, it is a magic potion that renews your energy on a regular basis. Sometimes we are able to solve our own problems and overcome our biggest challenges by helping others manage their troubles and getting past what challenges them most. This is what a mastermind group offers you: giving and receiving help simultaneously. Life could not get any better.

Now that you know the benefits of joining a mastermind group, you should start preparing yourself for committing to one of these groups. Remember, being part of such a group requires commitment in order for all the members to benefit from the activities you do together. Search for an online mastermind group and look for a group that suits your thought and goals. Good luck!

It’s All About The Swagger

Folks have talked concerning the swagger in the popular media for a very long time now. However what is this swagger exactly and how do we have a tendency to get it? Swagger is a mental thing. It is a state of mind. You see, some individuals are born with swagger whereas others come to possess it and a few folks can never get it whether or not they’re terribly wealthy and successful. Swagger comes from knowing that you’re secure in yourself; that nobody will bring you down. Check out my article on self confidence

And individuals who have it shine from the within out. You can tell if someone has swagger by the approach they walk or perhaps talk. This can be not to be confused with conceitedness though; swagger could be a positive trait. Thus how are you going to get swagger? You have to understand that swagger comes from inside and has terribly little to try to to with clothing, shoes, bling or any different fake poser perspective enhancement.

If you are self confident then you’ll naturally get swagger. So as to achieve this, you want to understand two things. One is that you are doing not understand the aim of this world and the other is that you are comfortable together with your position in life. You like to influence others and you exude cool wherever you go. Individuals will naturally follow you as you lay back slightly and walk down the road as if you were being attentive to your favorite song.

The most effective half is that as a result of of the confidence you exude, you may always have a following of the opposite sex. Women will flock to you prefer moths to a flame; a flame of fine vibrations! You’ll never be alone as a result of you will always be surrounded by folks willing to pay their lives with you. These will be women, friends and even business associates. Swagger is really an exquisite thing and it will come back to you too. It is all regarding the approach you take a look at yourself.

Therefore, go look at yourself within the mirror and be snug in the data of yourself. You are good enough for the world and you do not owe anyone anything. You respect all mankind and you forgive those who disrespect you. You’ve got no cares as a result of you understand that folks who do care end up caring for nothing at all. This is often because life is finite and our role in this world is too. So go ahead and be at peace and swagger can return to you too.

Building Social Skills – Knowing When Someone Lies In Conversation

To be calm and relaxed and in control in any social situation, it is important knowing how to tell if someone is lying to you in all conversations. Here are my ten tips for telling if someone is lying to you, so you can find out the truth as fast as possible:

Ten tips for detecting a liar:

1. Eyecontact
When people are lying, they often try to avoid straight eye contact. This is a very good lie detector test. If you know your partner very well, it’s even better. If your partner refuses to look you in to eye, there has to be some reason to it.

2. Eyemovement
Keep on eye of the pupils. Good rule of thumb is that while answering your questions the eyes glancing to the right is a good sign. Eyes glancing to the left are not so good. If you want the truth, that is.

3. Stories don’t match
Most of the couples have discussions about their comings and goings. If there has been cheating going on for some time, a person who is telling lies usually forgets at least something what has been told before, and eventually says something what doesn’t match at all to earlier stories.

4. The excuses
Mainly excuses why you can’t do something together. Unusual and constant absence of your partner due different excuses (appointments, need to travel for work etc.), may indicate that cheating is going on. Naturally it depends on your partner’s job etc.

5. Tone of the voice
Is the tone of your partner same as usual when having a conversation about cheating, or is there deviations in pitch. Maybe it is higher or lower than normally? If there is, ask more questions.

6. Hesitation
Is there a notable pause before answer to your question is delivered? If there is, it may be required to make up a lie.

7. Switching the topic
When having this serious conversation about trust, is your partner trying to switch the topic, or refuses to discuss about it altogether? If this is the case, it’s suspicious at least.

8. Appearance
Is there a sudden improvement in someone’s outlook? New motivations etc., but “the case subject” is not more considerate towards to you than before. Then your partner may be considerate to someone else.

9. Quarrelsomeness /Anger
If there is a sudden change to worse in your partners behavior, that may also be an indicator of an affair. For some cheaters this is their way to react for feeling of guilt.

10. Bodylanguage
When somebody touches or covers ones mouth while speaking, or when asked questions, that’s one of the best indications that the truth is not spoken at the moment. If you know your partner well, observe also any kind of gestures which are not common to the “suspect” while having conversation.

Also keep an eye of the posture. Hands in a pocket, crossed arms or any kind of postures which can easily be seen as “holding something back”-type of behavior, might indicate that there is something going on. This is also “case-sensitive”. Look for anything which is unusual behavior to your partner. These signs of body language lying could also indicate that you are lied to at the moment.

So no matter how you apply these tips to your everyday life, your mind is sure to be enriched now that you know how to tell if someone is lying. You will be empowered into making better business decisions, building stronger relationships and being a better human being in general.

What You Need To Know About The Benefits Of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Programming and it is an increasingly popular tool in training and mentoring. It provides a system to understand how we think, influence and change things for the better. The purpose of it is to help you remember certain techniques and ultimately work out ways that you can make steps towards with what you want to achieve in life. NLP is frequently used in organizations to help them change, but can also be used personally and in other arenas.

Businesses are some of the main beneficiaries of NLP. Some of the key benefits are in developing skills of leadership, sales, coaching, presenting and influencing. It helps leaders to improve their thought processes relating to their capacity to manage change and communicate ideas. By also identifying areas of weakness, it gives room for these to be worked on and moved past through the method of developing high performance models to deal with different circumstances such as managing staff effectively and helping them implement change.

Another key area where NLP benefits people is in personal relationships. This particularly helps people in terms of dating; especially those men and women who may find talking to the opposite sex in a social situation a little intimidating. It helps them to overcome any nervousness through identifying their barriers so they can improve their skills of engaging with people on a personal and emotional level and thus increase their chances of success when talking to prospective friends or partners.

Linked to this is the idea of using NLP to influence personal change. It can be used to help change people’s mindsets so they feel they can make changes for the better in their lives. It is commonly used to help people stop smoking or lose weight, making them think more positively about their ability to manage the process and focus on the positive outcome that will be achieved if they stick to their goals. It also helps people overcome fears by encouraging them to think about them differently.
